Can a player be dropped for free from the minor league roster or do we need to retain that cap hit if they have more than 1 yr on their contract?

Hey DJ,

Any player, minor or pro, you must retain salary on, if releasing with more than one year remaining.

Might wanna check with Troy and Pat, but that my understanding

If you release a player with a contract more than 1yr whether they are on the main roster or minor league roster you will have to pay the cap penalty. If you release a player with 1yr left on their cotract there is no cap penalty.

Examples

Devils release Taylor Hall 1yr-5m/yr-1 way Contract- No cap penalty

Devils release Taylaor Hall 3yrs-5M/yr-3 way contract- Cap penalty of 5M for 3yrs
