TopShelf Rumor Round-Up
September 17th, 2023
With trading season about to commence, many teams are rumored to be talking, and actively seeking trades in hopes of shoring up their rosters before the seasons start.
Being the inaugural season for TSDHL, the doors are wide open for two teams make that historic, first trade.
Could it be a Blockbuster?
Without further ado, here is your latest rumor round-up.
1. VANCOUVER CANUCKS
GM Cooper, and Vancouver Canucks have let teams know that they are actively seeking a trade for both Centers, Tomas Hertl and Evgeny Kuznetsov. The Canucks are feeling good about their chances for a playoff berth later this year, but feel they have a weakness in net that needs addressing.
GM Cooper went on to say that since the Canucks are in "win-now" mode, they're open to trading current and future draft picks, including 1st rounders, if it means giving their team a better chance to succeed this season.
While the Canucks have never publicly stated they're shopping F, Dylan Guenther, he could be a dark horse candidate to be traded, if the right deals comes knocking.
GM Cooper left a finishing statement by saying, "In the right deal, nobody is off the board".
2. COLORADO AVALANCHE
GM Pat, and Colorado Avalanche have recently leaked a handful of names to the media in hopes of catching a trade. Among those being rumored available via trade are: Goaltenders, Antti Raanta and Danill Tarasov. Wingers, Arturri Lehkonen and Nino Niederreiter. And Prospects, Thomas Harley and Zachary Jones. GM Pat stated, he is "always looking to make moves", and is "primarily looking at goalies".
Behind the Avs three-headed beast of MacKinnon, Rantanen and Makar, is fellow Avalanche forward, Arturri Lehkonen, who remains an under the radar player of value. From scoring the OT series-clinching goal in Game 4 of the 2022 Western Conference Finals, to hoisting the Stanley Cup for the first time, Lehkonen has enjoyed himself many highs in the last couple years, and that momentum continued through this previous season. With captain Gabriel Landeskog out with a long-term injury, Lehkonen's work ethic won him a spot within Avs top-6. He did not disappoint, putting up careers markers with 51pts in 64gp. With Landeskog expected to be out for the entirety of another regular season, Lehkonen holds the inside track for a top-6 role. Though, with the Avs recent signings of Tomas Tatar and Jonathan Drouin, it could be more likely that Lehkonen finds his home somewhere in the middle-6. The 28yr old carries a 3yr-3.05M contract.
ARTURRI LEHKONEN
3. CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS
The Blackhawks have, arguably, the best two forward prospects in hockey, in Conor Bedard and Adam Fantilli. If both prospects pan out the way they've been projected broadly by scouts, the future looks very bright in Chicago for many years to come. However, with new stars, comes a new supporting cast. As both Bedard, and Fantilli are centers, it is said that Blackhawks GM, DJ, is "looking to add a scoring forward". However, DJ added that he was not interested in trading away any goaltenders "at the moment", and will be electing to start the season as is, to "see how that plays out".
To receive a "scoring forward", the Blackhawks have placed a trio of defenseman on the trade block. The trio includes, Mikey Anderson, Braden Schneider, and Jake Walman. The offensive output is fairly limited amongst them as each player put up, 20pts, 18pts and 18pts, respectively, but what they lack in offense, they make up for in peripherals. Mikey Anderson, 24yrs old, led the trio in Hits last year with 162. Schnieder, was not far behind with 147 Hits, as well as leading the trio in Blocked Shots with 130. Now 21 yrs old, Schneider is a former 1st round pick in 2020, where he was drafted by the Rangers, 19th overall. He has made his way into an NHL regular at a young age, and will look to improve upon his numbers this year. Schneider is not known much for his offensive capabilities, but if he could chip in some, he could be a decent stash for the future.
BRADEN SCHNEIDER
Other names rumored to be available from Chicago: Forwards, Scott Laughton and Dakota Joshua, prospects, picks.
4. NEW JERSEY DEVILS
GM Troy and New Jersey found themselves fall into the #1 pick in the TSDHL Inaugural Draft after winning the lottery. With the 1st overall, New Jersey selected G, Thatcher Demko, which ultimately sent shockwaves that reverberated through the leagues first, three rounds of the Draft, in which we saw 21 goalies get selected. GM Troy and Devils went on and selected another goaltender, Elvis Merzlinkis, 41st overall in the 3rd Round. With their goaltending situation on lockdown, and star forwards Jack Hughes, and Nico Hischer running the the front-end, the Devils will look to be a force.
While it is unclear exactly what return GM Troy is hoping to get in a potential trade, we do know that intriguing forwards, Brock Boeser, and the young Alex Newhook, are two assets that would bring in a good return. Alex Newhook, former 16th overall pick by Colorado in the 2019 NHL Draft, had a rather unspectacular season last year where he recorded 30pts in 82gp. Newhook, who relies on his hockey IQ and playmaking skills, got short looks on the top line with MacKinnon, but was unable to generate any offense. He seemed to lose his confidence after that, and when the Avalanche eventually traded him to Montreal Canadiens this offseason, Newhook was nothing but smiles. He will get a second look, or just simply a better, longer look than with the Avs, to make the Canadiens top-6. Montreal has pulled off a couple good low-risk/high-reward trades in recent years including former 3rd overall pick, Kirby Dach, who had his best season to-date in his first year with Canadiens. With some patience, Newhook has the potential to find offensive traction in Montreal.
ALEX NEWHOOK
Brock Boeser could end up bringing in a bigger return than Newhook, for now at least. Boeser is very offensively skilled and scores at a great rate, however, the knock on him has always been the tag of "injury-prone". He has played in 71pg and 74gp, career highs, which may suggest that he is getting over his injury-prone days. Fully healthy and with a full season played, its very possible that Boeser will finally put up 60+pts.
